Training & Practices

Training

GTA Rollergirls train with safety first in mind. All new skaters are put through a 8 week training program in which they learn the basics of skating and roller derby. During this 8 week program skaters learn about derby stance, stride and balance, falling and stopping, the official Women’s Flat Track Derby Association rules, blocking, whips and pushes, pacing and everything else they need to know to start playing roller derby. Once you are drafted to a team we help you build the strength, endurance, stability and smarts you need to be a great team player.

Our training prinicpals are:
• Functional exercises to reduce injury.
• Provide variations and modifications to adapt to individual goals or needs.
• Build on stability, strength, endurance while teaching the methodology for specific movements.
• Once you have passed a minimum skills test, you will be taught the game and scrimmaging right away in a safe controlled environment.

Practices

During off-season, we hold two practices per week. During the regular season, we hold 2 practices per week, with additional bouts and events taking place on the weekend. Our season begins in March and ends in the late summer.

Practices are held in the west end of Toronto.
