Season Endings and New Beginnings

It’s been an eventful past two weeks for the GTA Rollergirls. As you’ve already heard from the venerable, the legendary, eSkimo Jo, the Chrome Mollys (with some help from visiting Debs) enjoyed a fantastic bout against Brantford’s Belles of the Brawl.

But the story you didn’t hear about was how the latest group of freshies faced the challenge of the dreaded Minimum Skills Test. And how a small, yet determined group emerged from the flames ever stronger, forged from fire-tested steel. Congratulations to the most recent skaters to pass their test! No doubt, their names will be forever immortalized in song. And by song, I mean post-practice karaoke.

A warm welcome to the newest additions to the GTAR family! :)

This past weekend, we skated, we celebrated, we libated, and maybe mooned a little. Surrounded by our friends and family (both on and off skates), GTAR wrapped up their 2011 season with a bash that will not soon be forgotten. Although Riley Rage would likely beg to differ, the main event for the night was not flip-cup, but indeed, the 2011 GTAR Awards ceremony. Thank you to Taranosaurus Rex and Slashpile Designs for generously providing beautiful custom medals. Also thank you Getcha Kicks, Rosemary’s Rabies, eSkimo Jo, Prairie Fire and the Debs for giving their time and artistic talents gluing, stitching, painting, papier-mache-ing and generally McGyvering all the awards together, and for having me along for the ride! And of course, thanks Kirk and Cindy for securing space for our shenanigans.

Also, our heartfelt gratitude goes out to Sloppy Boggins, a veritable Renaissance Man. Probably the nicest guy on 8-wheels you’ll ever meet, this man is a coach, a friend and an amazing artist. As soon as they’re available, I’ll post some pictures of the unbelievable trophy he fashioned for us, just waiting to be hoisted victoriously by the winner of our annual freshie tournament. Don’t worry, we’ve already broken it in for you. Interpret that as you will.

Congratulations to all the winners, runners up and nominees. You’ve all given us something to aspire to and work towards. Thank you for your hard work this season!
