Congratulations to Splat Benatar on receiving The Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award!

Today, GTARollergirl’s President Splat Benatar (aka Cynthia Brooks) was awarded The Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award – a certificate and pin presented by Ontario Lt.-Gov. David Onley at a special Queen’s Park ceremony to honour those “who have made a significant, sustained, unpaid contribution to their community, in Canada or abroad”.

Splat believed in reviving the sport of roller derby by starting the GTA Rollergirls (GTAR), a not-for-profit, all-inclusive league involving men and women of all ages, interests, fitness levels, and professions.

Over the years GTAR has supported many charitable organizations with food and cash donations such as Parkdale Food Bank, Community Centre 55, Plan Canada, Heart & Stroke Foundation and even helped finance a private Adoption. In 2013 GTAR also co-hosted with TORD the Clam Slam – a PRIDE TORONTO event – and participated in The City of Peterborough’s Pride event. In 2014 GTAR plans to continue to support Plan Canada, Lion’s Club and other organizations that need help.

What makes this even more special is the special camaraderie and support system in the derby community for all of those involved. I am very proud to be a member of GTAR and for being a part of this great sport that plays with many other fantastic leagues.
